Tuesday food hero: Anthony Bourdain

Here at Sillis, one of our all-time food heroes has got to be the legendary Anthony Bourdain. Pretty much the funniest, grittiest tale about food and life as a chef, Kitchen Confidential is, as the man himself terms it, a book about his “adventures in the culinary underbelly.”

Anthony's also famously tried warthog's bum... fancy that on the specials for next week?

Dating his obsession with food back to the first time he tried oysters in France, Bourdain describes life as a chef as one mingled with misfits, drugs and sex. Whilst we’d say our days here at Sillis might not be quite as exciting as that, Bourdain’s memoir/expose certainly sheds light on what life is like working in the world’s top restaurants like New York’s Michelin-starred Brasserie Les Halles.

Anthony Bourdain – known for eating a whole cobra (with its heart still beating!)  in Vietnam on his TV show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, claims that the most disgusting thing he’s ever eaten is… a Chicken McNugget. Well Anthony, you’re welcome to come to Sillis any time, and we’re pretty sure our Halloween specials will be a damn sight more tasty than an entire cobra, or indeed a chicken nugget.

Check out the book on Amazon here.
He’s also pretty funny! Mooch on over to his Twitter.

Our poster-boy for the week.

Not for the faint-of-heart, scotch bonnet chillis (also known as "the ball of fire") are renowned to be the world's hottest pepper, which leads us to the other specials for this week:

It's all for the love of music: what does music mean to you?

Music plays a major role in everything we do at Sillis! It’s basically our salvation… This week we’ve been absolutely loving one of our all-time favourite DJs, the legendary D&B mogul Andy C’s most recent podcast. Check it out here. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have been doing!

He's spotted one of our tasty sarnies... obviously.

Andy’s positive, uplifting soulful house helps us to feel creative and happy; it gets the juices flowing on those days we all have now and then, when you might not really be feeling it. Tunes like these basically stop us all here from going crazy during the mad busy mornings!

So, what does music mean to you? And what have you been bopping your lovely heads to this week? Let us know on Facebook or Tweet us!

Adam Richman, we salute you.

Here at Sillis there’s one new TV show we really can’t wait for… Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America. In case you haven’t heard of it yet (isn’t everyone as crazy about sandwiches as we are?), Adam is the guy behind the hugely addictive and often quite repulsive cult series Man V Food.

Quite clearly an absolute hero.

Reinforcing American obesity stereotypes wherever he goes, Adam has for the past two years been bombarding the Good Food channel with doughnuts the size of a penny farthing’s front wheel, burgers that look more like bean bags and pizzas which could quite legitimately be mistaken for Twister mats. And he ploughs through it all with a smile on his face, rarely beaten by any mammoth meal – despite often suffering with the fatal ‘meat sweats’. Now that’s the American spirit for you…

Nowadays Adam appears to have honed his focus and rather sensibly opted to use his hard-hitting journalistic prowess to explore the US of A’s sandwich offerings. Using ‘best’ synonymously with ‘largest,’ Adam spends each episode eating his way through more meat than we often thought possible of human beings. Adam’s chosen three sandwiches per region across ten regions to compete for the accolade of his personal favourite, and we just can’t get enough of it. Move over X Factor!

We don't know when this sandwich spectacular is coming to our screens here, but you can always catch Man V Food on Dave during the afternoon and evening (3-4 and 7-8).

Now we just need to tempt Adam over to the UK to see what he makes of Sillis!
